Google Earth is a free program from Google that allows you to "fly" over a virtual globe and view the Earth through high-resolution graphics and satellite images. It is greatly superior to static maps and satellite images. Google Earth gives you a drone's-eye view of the world below.
Google Earth is the world's most detailed globe and one of the most frequently downloaded programs in the history of the internet. Within minutes you will be zooming in on your hometown and taking visual excursions to our planet's most visited or most remote places.
Google Earth is a free downloadable program that you install on your Windows, Mac, or Linux desktop or laptop computer. The program requires very little space on your hard drive because the images are stored on Google's servers and streamed to your computer upon demand.
Most of the images in Google Earth were acquired within the past three years, and Google is continuously updating the image set for different parts of the Earth. Large cities generally have more recent and higher resolution images than sparsely inhabited areas.
High resolution imagery can be used for many purposes, including digital and print maps, backgrounds for drawings, or perspective images of the new 3D imagery. This tutorial will show you how to find, download, print, and stitch together those images.
Before going to Google Earth or Maps, see if there is any GIS satellite imagery available in your area. The United States has orthoimagery available at The National Map that is free to download and in the public domain. Your area might have local GIS orthoimagery that is of higher quality than the national imagery. Below are two images of the same area. The left is orthoimagery is from Amherst, MA GIS Data, while the right is from Google Earth. The GIS data is older, but much higher resolution. Depending on the source of the imagery, it may come in a variety of formats, including GeoTIFF or JPEG 2000.
Google Earth Pro can now be downloaded for free, which enables saving and printing of high resolution images up to 4,800 x 4,800 pixels.. There are two ways of exporting images out, through saving or printing.
Maps on Google Maps have an integer 'zoom level' which defines theresolution of the current view. Zoom levels between 0 (the lowestzoom level, in which the entire world can be seen on one map) and21+ (down to streets and individual buildings) are possiblewithin the default roadmap view. Building outlines, whereavailable, appear on the map around zoom level 17. This valuediffers from area to area and can change over time as the data evolves.
When developing for mobile devices, you can use the API's scale parameter to return higher-resolution map images that solve the issues above. The scale value is multiplied with the size to determine the actual output size of the image in pixels, without changing the coverage area of the map. Default scale value is 1; accepted values are 1 and 2.
For example, a scale value of 2 will return the same map coverage area as a request with no scale specified, but with twice as many pixels in each dimension. This includes roads and labels, so that they're legible on high resolution, small size screens, as well as when scaled by the browser.
Most JPEG images are progressive, meaning that they load a coarser imageearlier and refine the image resolution as more data arrives. This allowsimages to be loaded quickly in webpages and is the most widespread use of JPEGcurrently. However, some uses of JPEG requirenon-progressive (baseline) images. In such cases, you may want to use thejpg-baseline format, which is non-progressive.
The pixel size limit on images applies after scaling is applied. Forexample, if the marker is set to scale:2, then the marker can belarger than the maximum size of 4096 pixels, as long as it reduces to less than4096 pixels after scaling. Use marker scaling in conjunction withmap scaling when displaying higher-resolution maps.
We live in a wonderful era when absolutely anyone can access the latest free satellite imagery of Earth; it only takes to know where you can find them. Our list of free satellite imagery will make it easier to decide which of the available web services has the data you need. Some of them are streaming free current satellite images, while some provide historical data. Some portals accumulate free high-resolution satellite imagery for profound scientific research and some are good for amateur use.
EOSDA LandViewer is a free GIS database with an easy-to-master interface that gives access to the most widely used satellite images, allows high-resolution satellite imagery free previews and ordering, and features many tools for analysis.
Imagery. EOSDA LandViewer offers miscellaneous global satellite images. You can get the most free up-to-date satellite images from Landsat 7-8, Sentinel-1 and 2, CBERS-4, MODIS, aerial data from NAIP, or get Landsat 4-5 historical satellite imagery. It also features an impressive list of free high-resolution satellite images for search and preview, and available for purchase. Some of the datasets you can get there include SPOT 5-7, Pleiades-1, Kompsat-2, 3, 3A, SuperView-1; the best spatial resolution comes up to 40 cm per pixel.
Download. With Sentinel Playground, you can obtain parts of the mosaic (JPEG); EO Browser enables the downloading of full-resolution images in various formats (JPEG, KMZ, GeoTIFF) or separate bands and band combinations.
EO Browser is an easy-to-master web service with a decent selection of free medium-resolution satellite imagery. One of its advantages is the ability to analyze and visualize image data. Sentinel Playground is more of a for-fun service for exploring and sharing fragments of the satellite imagery mosaic of the world.
Download. Remote Pixel no longer allows Sentinel-2 and CBERS-4 data downloads since the AWS buckets moved to Requester Pays. You can open the link and download data from AWS with your own account. The good news is you can still use Remote Pixel to download free Landsat-8 images and spectral bands.
Download. To access free download high-resolution satellite images, you need to add images to the cart and order them. The downloading is carried out via an FTP link sent to your email address.
Imagery. The image resolution depends on the area, and the most precisely captured regions are Las Vegas, Nevada, and Cambridge (15 cm). Free satellite images come from Landsat-8 as well as aircrafts, drones, kites, and balloons.
Imagery. Spatial images originate from multiple satellites (Sentinel-2, Landsat-8, NEXRAD, GOES-16 and 17, CBERS on AWS, and many others. The platform highlights usage examples referring to agriculture, disaster response, satellite imagery, geospatial, etc.
Download. Users can share a permanent link or download the required free satellite images via the snapshot option selecting the preferred resolution (30 m-10 km), file format (JPEG, KMZ, GeoTiff, PNG), zipping, and clicking the download button.
Search. Data types are grouped as GPS/GNSS, SAR, Lidar/SfM, seismic and tropospheric data both already downloaded and currently streaming. Each data category has a video tutorial with user guidelines. For example, daily or hourly GPS free up-to-date satellite images are filtered by network and station name, temporal availability.

The Köppen-Geiger climate map is provided with a spatial resolution of 0.5 degree (30 arc minutes) representative for the 50-year period 1951-2000. The map is available as low resolution image (gif) and as high resolution vector map (pdf). Data may be downloaded as text file (ASCCI). Further data formats are available for the Köppen-Geiger climate map re-analyzed in January 2017 (next section). Maps: gif ( 130 kB) pdf (297 x 210 mm, 1.3 MB)
Data: Koeppen-Geiger-ASCII.txt ( 245 kB) High resolution map and data (version March 2017) The re-analyzed Köppen-Geiger map is provided with the higher resolution of 5 arc minutes using the downscaling algorithms described by Rubel et al. (2017). It is representative for the more recent 25-year period 1986-2010. Additionally, the colour table was optimized for the higher resolution resulting in a slightly different look of the map. Two data sets are provided: A raster file together with a R-code for individual visualization code with raster file: Map_KG-Global.R and kmz files for Google Earth. The latter are available in low (0.5 degree=30 arc min), medium (10 arc min) and high (5 arc min) resolution (see figure below), because not all computers may be able to display the large file of the high resolution map.
